The name Vlist originates from the river Vlist which flows from Schoonhoven to Haastrecht where it enters the Hollandse IJssel. The river Vlist forms the border between the Lopikerwaard and the Krimpenerwaard. In ancient times skippers let tow their boats by horses thru the river Vlist, on their way from Schoonhoven, through Polsbroek and Benschop to Utrecht. At the river Vlist there is also a village with the same name.
The earliest known “van der Vlist” was born in Benschop (1625), descendants were born in Stolwijk (1736), Gouderak (1824), Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel (1889), Ouderkerk aan den IJssel (1923), Kleve Germany (1979 ) and finally in the Nijmegen area.
